David Allen – My Council – TTPAPC 2022 Poetry

The love of blue and redness,

No green nor minor greys.

Of ordered seats and houses

Is in your veins ablaze,

Strong love of clear division

And policy resolute

I know but cannot share it,

My love is for dispute

I love a hung parliament,

A land of sweeping range,

Of ragged politicians,

Debate and flooding change.

I love her wide opinions,

I love her diversity,

Her beauty and her power –

The wide grey land for me!

No more stark ring-barked discourse

That tragic status quo,

The red-blue defined mountains,

Bowed before the low.

The tangle of the parties

Speaking with compromise

As voices deck the podiums

And speak not warm safe lies.

Core of my land, my council!

Her pitiless majority,

When sick at heart, around us,

We see the trod minority –

But when the grey clouds gather,

And we can vote once more

The drumming of a people,

For voices we adore.

Core of my land, my council!

House of the Rainbow Seat,

For red and blue so constant,

She pays us back complete –

Over the hopeful peoples,

Watch after paper wrote,

The surge of greys supplanting

That widens as we vote.

A free-hearted country,

A vibrant, changing land –

All who have not known her,

You will not understand –

Though earth holds many councils,

Wherever I may fall,

I know to what grand country

My silent voice will call.
