Abby Dickerson – A Poem for Ava – TTPAPC 2022 Poetry

From the moment our eyes first met,

Until your last dying breath,

Never could I have foretold,

What warmth you brought from the cold.

It was only upon finding you,

Could I discover a part of me,

And with the light, you shined through,

I found the courage I was blind to see.

Though it was on that sorrowful day,

When I felt my world turn to grey,

My soul shattered, no words could I say,

To tell myself all would be okay.

With each day that passed in disbelief,

Without you, I can’t deny,

Was clouded in my grief,

For I was scared to say goodbye.

But I need not say farewell,

For all my fondest thoughts of thee,

Within my heart, they still shall dwell,

To comfort and heal me.

And although it is difficult to see beyond the sorrow,

A grief I dare not speak,

May looking back in memory, welcome you tomorrow,

For you were a magic, so unique.

May your spirit reignite,

For not even death destroy it,

I will feel you in the darkest night,

See a world cast in beauty, a fire you emit.

Because despite each lonely tear,

For all that I may fear,

This suffering will surely cure,

As you live on, forevermore.
