Library Makerspace says goodbye after almost five years

After pairing students with technology for years, the UOW Library Makerspace is closed for good.

Beginning in 2017, project coordinator Nathan Riggir said it would be a “pilot space that will be a strong learning environment.”

“We see it as being a place to get the first hands-on experience with these types of machines, the first node in a network of the higher-end technologies that are available at UOW,” Riggir said.

The space trained students in emerging tech like 3D printing and VR, but last night in a Facebook group dedicated to the space, Riggir said that has come to an end.

“The project has now ceased, and the space will be reviewed against new priorities – but importantly, it will remain a space for students,” Riggir said.

“We will be working through options and seeking student feedback over the coming months, so stay tuned.

“Alternative spaces and resources are available at UOW if you are interested.”

There was an outpouring of thanks in the comment section.

“Big thanks to Nathan and the team at maker space for providing a very unique experience to UOW,” Harry Wright said.

“Loved spending free time and afternoons at the maker space and chatting with the team while trying out new technologies in VR or using the 3D printers.”

“Thanks to the team for all the hard work! I loved the makerspace (sic) when I was at uni – sad to see it go,” Kate Kaiba said.

A UOW Makerspace will still be around on Innovation Campus in North Wollongong.
