Last night student reps at an unofficial meeting of Wollongong Undergraduate Students’ Association (WUSA) discussed the clash between their anti-Proctorio protest and the third day of graduations tomorrow.
The Council was largely split down factional lines. Labor councillors pushed to postpone out of respect for graduating students while Socialist Alternative (SALt) members said the disruption would be minimal.
An informal vote in the WUSA Facebook chat fell in favour of pushing the protest outside UOW Library to this Thursday at 12:30pm.
General Representative Jack Mansell (SALt) voted against postponing.
“It’s based on a wrong belief that protests alienate students, which isn’t true,” Mansell told the Tertangala.
“That being said, we are all committed to making the Thursday event as big as possible.”
The Zoom meeeting got heated at times.
Labor’s Ben Hancock traded insults with Mansell over each other’s contribution to the protest.
At one point Hancock was muted by moderator Tyberius Seeto, who called on councillors more than once to keep things civil.
